Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 12, 2025

Introduction and Scope

Lemnisket ("we", "us" or "our") is committed to protecting your personal information. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect personal information when you use the Lemnisket online platform and services (the "Services"). It is intended to comply with applicable privacy laws including Quebec's Law 25 (Act to modernize provisions respecting the protection of personal information), Canada's federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), and the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This policy applies to all users worldwide whose personal data we process, and it provides clear and easily accessible information about our data handling practices, as required by these laws.

By using our Services, you agree to the collection and use of your personal information in accordance with this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Services.

Who We Are

Lemnisket is a Montreal-based educational platform offering mastery-based quantum computing courses with quizzes, spaced repetition, and structured content. For the purposes of data protection laws, Lemnisket (located in Québec, Canada) is the "data controller" of your personal information. We have appointed a Privacy Officer responsible for personal information protection in compliance with Law 25. You can find our contact details at the end of this policy.

Personal Information We Collect

We only collect personal information that is necessary for the purposes identified in this policy, in accordance with the principle of data minimization. The types of information we collect include:

  • Account Information: When you sign up, we collect information such as your name, email address, and password. This is required to create and administer your account. We may also collect your preferred language or other profile details you choose to provide.
  • Course and Usage Data: We track your progress in courses, quiz performance, exercise results, and other learning activities. This usage data helps us provide mastery-based learning features and monitor your progress. We also collect any feedback, notes, or communications you submit through the platform.
  • Timezone and Location: We collect your time zone (or general location) to customize certain features, such as scheduling daily experience point (XP) updates at an appropriate time. If you provide your time zone or if our system infers it from your device or IP address, we will treat this as personal information. (Note: We do not collect precise GPS location data.)
  • Payment Information: If you purchase a course or subscription, payments are handled through our third-party payment processor, Stripe. We do not receive your full credit card number, but we do collect information related to your purchase such as the payment transaction ID and billing country for tax purposes. Stripe may collect additional financial details directly from you to process the payment (see "Third-Party Service Providers" below).
  • Communications: If you contact us with a question, support request or otherwise communicate with us (for example via email), we will collect your name, email, and the content of your correspondence in order to respond.
  • Cookies and Similar Technologies: When you use our website, we use cookies and similar tracking technologies as described in our Cookie Policy. These may collect information about your device, browser type, pages viewed, and usage patterns. We obtain your consent for any non-essential cookies (such as analytics cookies) as required by Law 25 and GDPR. For details, please see our Cookie Policy.

We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 14 without parental consent. Users must be at least 14 years old to create an account, or we must have verifiable consent from a parent or guardian if a younger child uses the Services, in accordance with Quebec law.

How We Use Your Information

We use personal information for the following purposes:

  • To Provide and Personalize the Services: We use your account and course performance data to provide you with the educational Services, including delivering course content, quizzes, and exercises, tracking your progress, and awarding points or certifications. This includes analyzing your quiz results and study history to tailor the learning experience to your needs (for example, adjusting content difficulty or scheduling spaced repetition based on your performance). Such personalization is done to improve your learning outcomes and is based on your interactions with the platform (this may be considered a form of user profiling under privacy laws, which we disclose to you here).
  • Account Management and Communication: We use your email to verify your account, to communicate important information about the Services (e.g. confirmations, password resets, critical updates), and to respond to your inquiries. We may also send you progress reports or reminders related to your coursework.
  • Service Improvements and Analytics: We may use aggregated and de-identified usage data to understand how our Services are used and to improve the content and user experience. For example, we might analyze quiz success rates to identify difficult course sections. When we perform analytics on personal data, we either use de-identified data or, where required, obtain your consent for analytics cookies/tracking.
  • Marketing and Newsletters: If you have opted in to receive marketing communications (for example, if you subscribed to our newsletter or agreed to receive updates about new courses), we will use your name and email to send you promotional emails. You can withdraw your consent and opt out of marketing messages at any time by clicking the "unsubscribe" link in such emails or contacting us. We do not send promotional emails without consent, in accordance with Law 25's explicit consent requirement and applicable anti-spam laws.
  • Payments and Transactions: When you make a payment, we use your information to process the transaction (through Stripe) and to maintain transaction records (e.g. for accounting and compliance with tax laws). Stripe uses cookies or similar technologies for fraud prevention and to remember your payment method – these are considered necessary to securely process payments.
  • Security and Fraud Prevention: We may use personal information (such as IP addresses or activity logs) to monitor for suspicious or fraudulent activity and to maintain the security of our platform. This includes enforcing our Terms of Service and preventing misuse of the Services.
  • Legal Compliance: We may process and retain personal information as needed to comply with legal obligations, such as financial reporting requirements, or to respond to lawful requests by public authorities (e.g., court orders or law enforcement requests).

We will not use personal information for purposes other than those identified above without obtaining your consent or unless otherwise permitted or required by law. We do not engage in automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects on you without human intervention; any automated analysis (profiling) we perform is solely aimed at enhancing your learning experience, not at making determinations about your rights or access to services.

Legal Bases for Processing (GDPR)

If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA) or another jurisdiction that requires a legal basis for processing personal data, we process your information on the following bases:

  • Contractual Necessity: Most of our processing is to provide you with the Services you requested. For example, when you create an account and take a course, we must process your personal data (like your login details, course progress, and quiz results) to perform our contract with you (i.e., to provide the educational service).
  • Consent: We rely on your consent for certain types of processing. For instance, we obtain consent before sending marketing emails, and we ask for your consent to use non-essential cookies or similar tracking technologies on our site. Where we rely on consent, you have the right to withdraw it at any time (see "Your Rights" below).
  • Legitimate Interests: We may process your data for our legitimate business interests, provided such processing is not overridden by your data protection rights. For example, it is our legitimate interest to analyze and improve our Services, to ensure IT security, and to prevent fraud. If we process personal data on this basis, we will ensure that our interests are balanced with your rights and expectations. You have the right to object to processing based on legitimate interests in certain cases (see "Your Rights").
  • Legal Obligation: In some cases, we need to process or retain your data to comply with laws. For example, we may keep payment transaction records to satisfy financial regulations or fulfill our obligations under consumer protection laws.
